FrontPage 2000: The Complete Reference

Web Site Creation and Management Tools - The first step in creating your own HCI Web site is to choose an editor. Here are a few of your options:

bullet

FrontPage Express: A free component of the Internet Explorer browser that enables you to create your own Web pages in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment, without knowing HTML.

bullet

FrontPage: The full version of Microsoft's Web site creation tool.

bullet

Adobe GoLive: A top-rated competitor of FrontPage.

bullet

Dreamweaver: Another highly ranked tool.

bullet

NetObjects Fusion

bullet

PVCS Web Content Manager (formerly NetObjects Collage)

Web-based Add-ins - While you are creating your site, enhanced Web-based counters, bulletin boards, site maps, and site search engines are available free of charge. These services are hosted on the Internet and are linked with Html and Java scripts to your site. The following services are incorporated into the IT Study Guide:

bullet

whatUseek.com Intrasearch - A professional site-level search engine. We use it for the search boxes on the IT Study Guide and the main Nova SCIS sites

bullet

FreeFind.com - Another site-level search engine with automatic site mapping. We use it for the site map links for the IT Study Guide and the main Nova SCIS site.

bullet

Site Meter - A  free, fast, and easy way to add a web counter to your web page. Not only does it display the number of visitors to your web site, it also keeps statistics on the number of visits each hour and each day. We use it to record visitors to IT Study Guide.

bullet

CGIforMe.com - A free service that hosts Web-based message boards, guestbooks, password protection, and voting booths. We used at one time for the IT Study Guide Discussion Board.

bullet

Zoomerang.com - Zoomerang provides free Web-based surveys. It was used for the usability survey on Ron's HCI Study Guide.

Web Hosting - The second step in the process is to select a Web host to serve your site. Most students have the option of using their university's server. However, space is usually limited. A better option is to use space on your local ISP or one of the free hosting services on the Internet. If you are using FrontPage, try to pick a service that supports FrontPage server extensions. (Read about our experiences with Crosswinds, Geocities, and Addr.com)

bullet

Addr.com - Our current host

bullet

Crosswinds.net

bullet

Easy Space  - Slow slow slow

bullet

FreeWebSpace.net (Excellent site - allows you to search for a web hosting site based on your criteria. Also, has reviews with example sites - Recommended!)

HyperMart

Tripod

Yahoo - GeoCities

FTP - The third step, once you have your page designed and a place to host it, is to transfer your files to the hosting server. Windows 98, FrontPage, and the other Web site creation tools have the ability to publish or transfer files to a host. However, when they don't work (a common occurrence), a dedicated FTP program is the most reliable means of updating your Web site.

bullet

WS_FTP: There is a limited (free) and a full version of this FTP program. The competition isn't worth mentioning.

Site Promotion - After your site is published to the Internet and accessible to visitors, it is time to promote it with the multitude of search engines. Site Add is a free service that submits your site to 15 different search engines.
