We just returned from the cluster weekend. This is the first time that we
have taken two different courses (Multimedia & DSS - usually we take a
course and its project). As a result, our flight out on Sunday didn't leave
until 7 pm. Like the previous cluster, we stayed at the Sheraton Yankee Clipper
hotel. It is right on the beach in Fort Lauderdale. Nova rates are $129/day off
season and $166/day during prime time.

We installed @Home cable modem service yesterday. So far, it appears to be
faster than our Sprint/Speedchoice MMDS (microwave) service. Speedchoice is
available in Phoenix and Detroit and provides up to 7MB/sec download and
28.8KB/sec upload. The cost, with the required telephone line, are $60/month.
The @Home cable service provides 1.5MB/sec download and 166KB/sec upload for
$40/month. If the cable service proves reliable, we will discontinue Speedchoice
and begin setting up a local Web server. Hopefully 166KB/sec is adequate for Web
serving.

Back from cluster weekend. SCIS just moved into a new building on Griffin
Rd. The new facility was first class and everything was brand new. We were sorry
to hear that Dr. Cohen was leaving to pursue an E-business opportunity and wish
her luck. Unrelated to cluster weekend, we recently converted our notebooks to
Windows 2000. Instead of upgrading, we chose to format and install on virgin
hard drives. The process was uneventful, and the PCs appear to run faster than
they did on 98SE.
